Author Val Mallinson of The Dog Lover's Companion to the Pacific Northwest

Isis and Cooper, by way of Val Mallinson

This is the story of how a washed-up copywriter, a puppy-mill puppy with a broken back, and a dog who lived in a cage in a barn overcame all obstacles to bring more joy to people and their pets.

Val Mallinson believes that beauty and hilarity are everywhere you look. Bitten by the travel bug early, she has explored all 50 states, a dozen European countries, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Val’s love of dogs began even earlier, thanks to her childhood companion Keegan, who waited, nose pressed to the window, for her to come home from kindergarten. Her favorite bedtime story was The Pokey Little Puppy, which also forecast a love of dessert. After being seduced by her mother’s adopted dog Thumper, Val adopted two miniature dachshunds, Cooper and Isis, from purebred rescue.

Cooper spent the first year of his life locked in a cage in a barn. When he broke free, he vowed from that day forward to chase as many squirrels through the world’s forests as the length of his extendable leash would allow. Isis spent her working years as a dog-bed demo model and nanny to eight fussy Italian greyhound show dogs. It was back-breaking work, literally. Post surgery for spinal cord injuries, she chose to retire to a life of leisure in the back seat of Val’s Prius.

Before devoting herself to the position of chauffeur and stenographer for the Wonder Wieners, Val survived a decade in the fast-paced and glamorous world of advertising and marketing copywriting. She penned snappy copy for extinct dot-coms, as well as for a large software company in Redmond, Washington. She helped author the stylish travel guide Moon Metro Seattle, and her writing and photography appear in Bark, Seattle Metropolitan, Northwest Travel, Northwest Palate, and CityDog magazines. With her husband, Steve, she has lived in Seattle for fifteen years.

In the course of writing The Dog Lover’s Companion to the Pacific Northwest and The Dog Lover’s Companion to Seattle, the Dachsie Twins have slept in the car in a downpour and eaten kibble off the cold, hard ground. They’ve learned how to navigate using the (bleep)-ing GPS, endured the admiration of excitable toddlers, and scratched at rashes caused by field grass allergies. It’s been worth every moment.
